Big Island Hawaii zipline: four areas, four kinds of day
A Big Island Hawaii zipline outing starts with a choice of side. Two operators sit in Hakalau, north of Hilo, one is in Honomū just beyond them, and one runs courses from Hāwī at the island's northern tip. Hakalau and Honomū are wet, green and built around waterfalls. Kohala is a forest gulch.
The gap comes mostly from length and extras: the cheapest is a three-hour Kohala course with water and equipment, the dearest a nine-hour day with lunch.

Our picks: Big Island zipline tours
The Hakalau courses cross waterfalls, while the Kohala courses run through forest in the north. The full-day tour adds lunch and a waterfall stop, and the Honomu course ends with a half-mile finale.

Waterfall ziplines near Hilo
The Umauma course uses nine lines above the Umauma River and its waterfalls, with about two miles of cable in total and a suspension bridge. Check-in at the visitor center in Hakalau is 45 minutes before the tour, and the zipline portion is listed at two hours. It costs $276.54 and takes children from age 4 at 35 to 275 lb. No experience is needed.
The botanical garden course nearby has eight lines, a suspension bridge and a view of Kamaeʻe Falls over rainforest ravines, for $237.70. The tour lasts up to two and a half hours, and your ticket includes free souvenir photos and a self-guided walk through the gardens afterwards. Riders from age 4 are welcome: from 70 to 275 lb alone, and from 35 to 70 lb in tandem with a guide.
In Honomū, the farm course has seven crossings ending in a half-mile finale over Kolekole Falls. It costs $245 and lasts about two and a half hours. Check-in is 30 minutes ahead, and you need to manage a half mile of uneven path. Children aged 4 to 12 ride from 40 lb, up to 260 lb for everyone.
Zipline tours in North Kohala
Both Kohala tours start at the Kohala Zipline base in Hāwī and run through a private forest reserve. One lasts three hours and costs $257, with two certified guides, rainwear, filtered water, sunscreen and bug repellent. The other, $204.19, includes water and all equipment: helmet, gloves and harness. Riders must be at least 8 and weigh 70 to 270 lb, checked at check-in.
The full-day option costs $323. Over nine hours it adds a naturalist guide, a deli-style lunch, drinks, towels, day packs and walking sticks to the zipline, and pickup is included. Choose it if you want a day out rather than a half-day activity.
Which zipline fits you
For waterfalls and the widest age range, take Hakalau or Honomū. For a forest setting and the lowest price, take the short Kohala tour. Families with small children should look at the 4-year minimum courses. Couples after a full day should take the nine-hour tour.
The Umauma and Honomū courses run in the rain, and the garden course in light rain. Heavy rain, thunder or strong wind can cancel the garden course, which then offers free rebooking or a full refund. Wear closed shoes and tie back long hair. Pregnancy rules out the Umauma, Kohala and Honomū courses, and weight and age limits differ from course to course.
